Born To Be Wide
Oxfam Buy What You Hear Event. All proceeds to Oxfam.
Guests DJs from the Scottish music scene play their all time favourite records, as long as they are not by The Smiths or Joy Division. A social night for musicians, promoters, journalists and anyone who likes a surprise selection of tunes.
Scotland’s leading music scene social night is to team up with Edinburgh’s Oxfam Music shop , to host a Buy What You Hear night on Thursday 5 November. Taking place at the capital’s Voodoo Rooms, the free event will see the DJs select their playlist from the store in Raeburn Place. As soon as a record has been played, guests will be free to buy it, with all proceeds going to the charity.
"The Oxfam record shop has an extremely diverse collection, to which I have contributed everything from dodgy German dance compilations to Norweigan death metal," says Born To Be Wide co-organiser, Olaf Furniss. "Our guest DJs will have total freedom to play what they find, unless of course, it is by The Smiths/Morrissey and Joy Division."
Born To Be Wide and the Oxfam Record Shop have collaborated in the past, with one guest DJ buying most of her playlist. The nights have also seen local artists such as Idlewild and Aberfeldy donating limited edition releases and signed CDs.
"A lot of our regular customers and donors are involved in Edinburgh’s music scene, and it’s great to have the opportunity to take the shop to them," says Jamie Morrison, manager of Edinburgh’s Oxfam Record Shop. "We have done a couple of nights with Born To Be Wide in the past, and they are always great fun. Expect the unexpected!"
