The Dylan Project
The Dylan Project

Much more than a tribute band, the idea came about after a chance meeting between Steve Gibbons and Fairport Convention's Dave Pegg. (Back in Birmingham in the mid 1960s they had been together in a band called the Uglys and are both confirmed Dylan fans). Steve invited PJ Wright, longtime guitarist in the Gibbons Band, Dave asked drummer Gerry Conway and Simon Nicol from Fairport, and they recorded their first Dylan Project CD in 1998. With the occasional addition of John "Rabbit" Bundrick from the Who's touring band, this lineup stayed together until 2006, when Simon was replaced by Phil Bond, who had played keyboards on the second Dylan Project album recorded the previous year.

Now in their nineteenth year on the road, the band comprises:-

Steve Gibbons acoustic guitar, lead vocal

Phil Bond piano, organ, accordion

Gerry Conway drums, percussion

Dave Pegg bass guitar

PJ Wright guitars, pedal steel

They have played concerts and festivals from Scandinavia to Greece, from Glastonbury to (naturally enough) Cropredy, Fairport's own annual gathering in Oxfordshire.

This forthcoming tour celebrates the 50 years since the recording of Dylan's enigmatic Basement Tapes, largely held to be one of the origins of the Americana genre, featuring original Dylan songs, several of which were taken into bestseller charts by British bands, and Dylan and The Band's versions of traditional and folk material.
