Kelly Willis and Band

Kelly Willis is Back Being Blue, to take a colour-coded cue from the title of her seventh album. It’s a shade she wears well, though long-patient fans might just say: You had us at back. They’ll take a new Willis record in whatever hue it comes, now that it’s been 11 years since her last solo release, 2007’s Translated from Love. The Austin-based singer/songwriter has hardly been MIA in the intervening years, having recorded and toured as part of a duo with Bruce Robison. But she’s setting the duet Mm.Oo. aside for do-it-alone mode, at least as far as the spotlight is concerned. (Robison hovers just outside it this time, as producer.). Hers is a solo voice again, but it’s not necessarily sotto voce: This is an album of songs about lonesomeness that also happens to be a cracklingly good time.

I attempted to make music that could fit in any era.But leans on the simplicity of the music that firstinspired me. Roots rockabilly country blues, to narrow it down for you! Kind of a Nick Lowe meets Skeeter Davis meets Crystal Gayle.

Kelly Willis

Kelly Willis looks back to country music before Nashville embraced power ballads and cute happily-ever-after songs. She has an old-fashioned country voice with a twang, a breathy quaver, a break or a throaty sob whenever she needs one…

The Wynntown Marshals

The Wynntown Marshals
The Wynntown Marshals

So here we are now, 10 years and three studio albums into the Wynntown Marshals’ career. The Edinburgh band that The Herald called “the best Americana band NOT from North America” couldn’t let their tenth anniversary slip past without some celebration, and they have chosen to mark a decade together with the release of a new album entitled “After All These Years” and another of their legendary headline shows at the Voodoo Rooms, of course!

Although primarily a retrospective look back at some of the recorded highlights of the past ten years, the 16-track collection, which is released on 1st September 2017, also includes 3 new, previously unreleased tracks to signpost the direction for the next chapters in the band’s history.

Join the Marshals in the beautiful Ballroom to participate in their celebrations as they mark a decade at the forefront of UK Americana and launch their career-spanning compilation album. This show also marks the hometown debut for their brand new line-up following the addition of new drummer Simon Walker and bassist David McKee.

We’ve heard a pre-release copy of one of the classic tunes from their 2008 debut EP which the new line-up has re-recorded especially for the compilation album and – particularly on the extended outro where the band members all really get to stretch out – it sure whets the appetite for how blinding the live shows of this incarnation of the Marshals are going to be!

This is shaping up to be a very special night of music which will make all Scots proud of the talent they have on their doorstep!
