Until recently, The Gift were regarded by those in the know as ‘the best kept secret’ in progressive and classic rock. Back in 2006, their first album ‘Awake & Dreaming’ wowed those in the know with its heady mixture of ‘70s style and contemporary soundscapes. Then there was silence...until the band reformed a few years ago and released 2014’s “Land of Shadows”, an ambitious song suite packed with strong melodies and instrumental ‘tours de force’. Then, in 2016, The Gift released their 3rd album, ‘Why The Sea Is Salt’, which Prog magazine described as a ‘masterpiece of the genre’. Their keysman Gabriele Baldocci is a world renowned classical pianist who is easily the match for a Wakeman or Emerson. Add to this the twin guitar attack of Leroy James and David Lloyd and you have a big, ornate sound which also rocks hard. In June this year, The Gift released their 4th album ‘Antenna’, which is even harder hitting than before whilst still retaining their signature sound. The Gift will be performing it plus their best-established material all round the UK and Europe throughout 2019 and 2020.
Onstage, The Gift deliver a full-on performance. Frontman Mike Morton is a trained actor and he delivers their musical stories with emotion and humour. They are one of the most arresting live Prog/Rock acts in the UK right now. Steve Hackett and Antony Phillips are friends and supporters of the band, having both contributed to past albums. They each testify to the band’s live power. Just don’t expect rock cliché. As Mike says: ‘Don’t come to us for songs about cars and girls.”
There is a Progressive Renaissance happening right now and The Gift are at its vanguard.
