In an uncertain number of years time, it will be acceptably cool to say that you first got into non-Grammy-winning artist Peter Bruntnell through his classic 2024 album Houdini And The Sucker Punch, before then going back and discovering his back catalogue of yet more “classics”. And you were there! You saw him live. You were one of those “10” people who saw him play in that modestly-sized room, almost 30 years into his career.So here we are again. Three years on, another album into Peter’s 13 or 14 album catalogue and shouldering the burden of even more sublime reviews. Every possible positive adjective has been called into play, although it must be noted that the word “sublime” can never be used enough. Not even 2021’s primarily solo, slightly synthy lockdown album succeeded in putting an end to his non-success, despite Mojo echoing the plea that, “Somehow, some way, this cult and infinitely class songwriter must get his due wider recognition”. The Scottish Daily Express with its 5 star review, slightly frustrated, said, or perhaps yelled, “I’m getting tired of saying this: He’s brilliant”. The Irish Times thoughtfully combined two quotes into one, saving us the trouble of going back and getting crushed under the sheer weight of Peter’s archive of press quotes: “With Journey To The Sun, the man whose songs NME once noted should be placed on school curriculums has done it again.” And he continues to do so. But not without a brief foray into dance music, in collaboration with mega pop-hit songwriter Rob Davies. A foray that succeeded in sneaking by, almost completely unnoticed, therefore providing us with no further fresh quotes. If veering off entirely into the dark world of autotune would have increased his chances of hitting the big time, we shall never know. But fortunately Peter’s taking his chances.New album Houdini And The Sucker Punch sees Peter re-employing his long-term band members Mick Clews (drums), Dave Little (electric guitar) and Peter Noone (bass), along with a number of his favourite musicians. Cameos include pedal steel virtuoso Eric Heywood adding magic to Houdini, The Flying Monk and Stamps Of The World, Son Volt / Uncle Tupelo’s Jay Farrar playing piano on Sharks, Peter’s old partner in crime (we suspect quite literally), James Walbourne of The Pretenders tearing up Yellow Gold, cellist Laura Anstee on Sharks and Jimmy Mac, Son Volt’s Mark Spencer’s Hammond organ and piano on Let There Be A Scar and mastering man Peter Linnane touching up the album with some added Hammond organ and synth.

When Sam Amidon flew to Los Angeles late in the winter of 2024 to collaborate with Sam Gendel, he had a deceptively complex plan for their session: That is, he had no real plan at all. Amidon and Gendel had long been two members of a mutual admiration society. When Amidon first saw Gendel play at his now-fabled residency at the Hollywood Italian restaurant Pace years earlier, he was wowed by Gendel’s open-ended enthusiasm and stylistic vim, plus charmed by his invitation to sit in on violin, though he didn’t know much about making “jazz.” Gendel, too, had been an ardent fan of Amidon’s voice and flexibility since seeing him on YouTube nearly two decades ago. Gendel even joined Amidon and the great Milford Graves for the 12-minute finale of 2017’s The Following Mountain. But what, exactly, were the New England folk musician now living in England and the pedal-hopping polyglot saxophonist going to do for the better part of a week in Gendel’s Venice home, in his ad hoc dining room studio? Neither exactly knew. Amidon offered up two ideas. First, they could simply play, pursuing whatever ideas felt good as they jammed. Or, perhaps, they could tinker with a batch of interpretations Amidon had been building, a loose set of somewhat familiar tunes—Yoko Ono’s “Ask the Elephant,” Lou Reed’s “Big Sky,” the rapturous hymn “Old Churchyard,” the standard English shanty “Golden Willow Tree.” Gendel’s eyes and imagination lit up with the latter idea, or at the chance to help Amidon in his decades-long quest to recontextualize what it means to sing a folk song or make folk music. When Amidon left Los Angeles just days later, the bulk of Salt River—his Gendel-produced debut for River Lea Recordings / Rough Trade and a radical reintroduction to the possibilities of Sam Amidon’s music—was done. Since his earliest days of releasing records, Amidon has been interested in the idea of submission, of working closely with collaborators who could take his skills as an interpreter, singer, guitarist, and fiddler somewhere unexpected. Thomas Bartlett and Nico Muhly once helped lead him to those unknowns, as did producer and multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily. His confidence as a bandleader and arranger have, of course, increased over decades on stages and in studios; his self-titled 2020 album, full of idiosyncratic and imaginative new renditions of sometimes-ancient songs, was the result of a touring unit, working as one. The submission had been subsumed. But he longed to be a beginner again, to submit to a process that was unfamiliar and even exotic with someone he knew he could trust—namely, someone like Gendel, whose understanding of how electronics might be applied to material often rendered with acoustic instruments intrigued Amidon. They invited drummer Philippe Melanson, a frequent collaborator of both, to join.&nbsp; Taken together, these 10 songs feel like a shared playground of discovery, Amidon finding new ways for old songs to exist in the company of two unfettered collaborators. They imbue Reed’s “Big Sky,” for instance, with the cool aplomb of Arthur Russell. Fluorescent stretches of synthesizer and slowly shuddering electronic drums interlock with Amidon’s acoustic guitar, together holding up his voice like the sky itself. They treat the shape-note great “On My Journey Home” like an emotional seesaw, giving its story of heavenward ascent hints of both gothic dread and New Age grace. The trio’s transformation of “Old Churchyard,” a classic hymn with deep roots in England and the United States,” is stunning. Here titled “Three Five,” it uses tessellated rhythms and a half-dozen electronic layers to suggest the clouds breaking, redemption arriving as darkness yields to whatever comes after. The fun they have with the fiddle tune “Salt River” during “Tavern,” the wonder they embody during Ono’s play on perspective “Ask the Elephant,” the way they dance in unison during Grey Larsen’s coruscant “Oldenfjord”: Amidon has never seemed to delight so much in warping source material so much as he has here, surrounded by this very good company.&nbsp; Salt River is credited to Amidon—a solo record, with Gendel producing and Melanson contributing assorted drums. But he’ll be the first to tell you that’s not quite right, that this is instead a group effort, made by three people who submitted not only to one another’s impulses but also to trying something new together. There in Gendel’s home, they built a little short-lived community, playing together beneath headphones until they would walk to the market together to buy ingredients for dinner that night. Amidon, after all, has always been drawn to music from communities, from groups of people sharing shape-note songs or hymns or drinking songs, groups of people sharing a moment.&nbsp; You can hear that essence so well on the trio’s joyful rendition of Ornette Coleman’s “Friends and Neighbors,” dishes and glasses clinking as Amidon first finds the melody and the lick. Melanson and Gendel slowly join in, playful bells and electronics and drums slipping around the recording of their dinnertime conversation. At the end, they all sing together, chanting out Coleman’s credo—“Friends and neighbors, that’s where it’s at,” and so on—like they’re gathered around a digital campfire. It’s a beautiful snapshot from a record of astounding possibility, where past and future brush side by side in a present of friendship and exploration.

Glen Matlock (born 27 August 1956) is an English musician, and the original bass guitarist of the punk rock band the Sex Pistols; having been introduced to guitarist Steve Jones, and drummer Paul Cook while working in Let It Rock - the precursor to SEX, Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s clothing boutique in London. He is credited as a songwriter on 10 of the 12 songs on the Sex Pistols&#39; only album, Never Mind The Bollocks. Glen MatlockMatlock left the band in late February 1977, with contemporary reports (given to news outlets by manager Malcolm McLaren) stating that he was “thrown out” because he liked the Beatles. The claim was fictional, with Steve Huey of AllMusic claiming that Matlock. In his self-penned book I Was a Teenage Sex Pistol, Matlock stated that he left the band of his own volition as he was &quot;was even more enamoured of The Faces and the mod groups prominently featured on London pirate radio in the late &#39;60s, as were Steve Jones and Paul Cook.&quot;&quot;sick of all the bullshit.&quot; In the 2000 documentary film The Filth and the Fury, the band members generally agree that there was tension between Matlock and vocalist Johnny Rotten, which Matlock suggests was further aggravated by Malcolm McLaren in an attempt to generate chaos within the band as a creative mechanism. In the 2002 Classic Albums documentary about Never Mind the Bollocks, Jones stated that in retrospect, pushing Matlock out of the band was a mistake, and that the group would have recorded more albums if Matlock had stayed in the band.After leaving the Sex Pistols, Matlock went on to form the Rich Kids, with himself as bass guitarist and singer, Midge Ure (guitarist, singer and keyboard player), Steve New (guitarist and singer) and Rusty Egan (drummer). Prior to this Matlock toured Europe and North America with Iggy Pop and played bass and co wrote material for his album Soldier.In 1996, Matlock recorded and released his first solo album Who&#39;s He Think He Is When He&#39;s at Home? on Creation Records. However, the album’s release was overshadowed by Matlock rejoining the original Sex Pistols members for the first of their many reunion tours (1996, 2002, 2003, 2007 and 2008).Beginning in the early ‘00s, Matlock would then assemble many short-lived groups including The Philistines, Dead Men Walking (feat. In November 2006, the Sex Pistols were inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.In January 2010, Glen Matlock reformed The Rich Kids for a one-off benefit concert in aid of ailing Steve New. The band, based in Los Angeles, toured Australia and the USA, and released a self-titled album in 2015. In 2012, Matlock made his acting debut in British drama film The Paddy Lincoln Gang, performing a scene at a live Faces concert. In 2017, Matlock joined a touring punk supergroup L.A.M.F. featuring Heartbreakers member Walter Lure, Clem Burke of Blondie, and Social Distortion&#39;s Mike Ness to pay tribute to the 40th Anniversary of Johnny Thunders &amp; the Heartbreakers‘ classic LP, 1977’s L.A.M.F.In 2018, Matlock released the critically acclaimed solo album Good To Go. A more stripped back, and almost rockabilly-styled album featuring legendary guitarist Earl Slick (David Bowie / John Lennon) and drummer Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats). The track “Keep On Pushing,” from the album was deemed “Best Song In The Universe Ever” on Little Steven’s Underground Garage radio show (Sirius XM).In April of 2022, Matlock was asked to join legendary New York band Blondie for their UK and US tours. Matlock remains a touring member of the group and is currently slated to appear on their forthcoming 2023 new studio album.In the summer of 2022, FX / Disney+ released the Danny Boyle directed Sex Pistols’ drama series Pistol (based on the Steve Jones autobiography ‘Lonely Boy’). Matlock was portrayed by actor Christian Lees in the series.In late 2022, Matlock signed a new worldwide solo record deal with Cooking Vinyl, which will see the label release Glen’s long-awaited, timely and politically pertinent new solo album Consequences Coming on April 27, 2023. The babatoni is an African one-string home-made 3-metre long bass guitar, and with a stick and an empty beer bottle, together with a cow skin kick drum and catchy melodies, he creates the most amazing and danceable original Afro Beats possible!Gasper’s unique style of Kwela music has received an extraordinary amount of online attention after a video of him playing by the lake shore went viral with over 20 million views. He has been featured by CNN and in the documentary ‘Deep Roots Malawi’, jammed with Joss Stone, appeared on Wired for Sound – Malawi, remixed by Aroop Roy for Sol Power Sounds and has been played by Iggy Pop on BBC 6! His debut album, Abale Ndikuwuzeni, roughly translates to ‘People, I want to tell you’. It is a fitting title as Gasper’s songs, all sung in the Malawi national language of Chichewa, talk about life and strife in the country, often including social issues such as the rich and the poor, child marriages etc.Gasper has toured the UK and Europe several times since his breakthrough video, playing in all environments from seated arts centres spaces to major festival stages. Gone Down Meadowland is the much-anticipated debut album release from Norwich, UK psych outfit Floral Image, releasing 25th April 2025 on the renowned Fuzz Club. After an extensive touring schedule throughout 2023, the band spent the following winter looking both inward and outward to the wide-skied rural landscape with the aim of distilling their wide pool of influences. Once the gigging horizons regularly started to expand beyond the sleepy shire of home, a fear of musical inertia had left the group asking themselves what their own sound even was. The long nights were used to re-assess and reconnect with a sense of play that had found itself shrunken in the rear-view mirror of a touring van. At Friday night jam sessions; wrapped in coats and warmed by homemade cocktails, Tex and Phil’s freezing living room provided the appropriate cultivation ground for the seeds of a new musical shape - one not solely intending to be big and formidable live, but provide a softer, more subtle recorded companion for both drunken gaiety with friends and unleashed introspection of the self.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;More than ever, the band wanted to produce a brand of East-Coast psychedelia that reflected the natural lusciousness and glorious solitude of the immediate world around them. Coming fresh out of support shows with Holy Wave and Glass Beams and witnessing first-hand how the delicate, sonic precision they flex on recordings only excels their live shows further, real justification was found. Over 30 songs were conjured, considered and arranged before being whittled down to a final 10 that epitomise what they do best - ten tracks of vivid hue, harnessed live power, all laced together in fluid lyrical harmonies. Taking inspiration from band favourites Woods, KGLW, Stereolab, among many others, a string of at-home recording sessions commenced over a 6-week period across the summer of 2024. There is a mischief and daydream to the character Floral Image, on full dynamic display across the record- a reflection of both the playful fraternity of band members Fergus Nolan (vocals, guitars), Jack Warner (vocals, keys), Matt Kennedy (bass guitar), Mitch Forsyth (drums, visuals), &amp; Phil Whitton (guitars, visuals), and the ever-weaving textures they make together. It is an infrastructure that is unstructured; a body of work that bends and grows and shifts between light, dark, malaise, excitement. Canaan Cox is the definition of a triple threat - artist, actor and dancer. His music is a fusion of contemporary country, pop and a hint of rhythm and blues, which is no surprise as he grew up in a musical household. Originally from North Carolina, his father blasted Conway Twitty records while his mother toured the southeast with her band, and his seven sisters ensured he had a healthy dose of pop music. Cox went on to earn his BFA in Musical Theatre from Catawba College which allows him a unique musical perspective that influences everything he does today, from writing original music to his performance during live shows. Cox moved to Nashville in the fall of 2016, and began playing the downtown bars on Broadway.

Joshua Lee Turner is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in Brooklyn. Josh is widely known for his YouTube channel Josh Turner Guitar, where he’s been posting original music, covers, and instructional videos since 2007, amassing hundreds of millions of views. Josh has toured extensively in the U.S. and abroad with original artist projects The Other Favorites and The Bygones, as well as with tribute shows A Celebration of Paul Simon’s Graceland and The Simon and Garfunkel Story. His most recent collaboration, The Bygones, released a self-titled album of original music in 2024, which took the band on tour across the U.S., U.K., and Europe, performing nearly 100 shows in one year. Josh is currently working on his first solo album of original music since his 2020 album, Public Life.

Paul&nbsp;Smith&nbsp;is best known as the singer for the Newcastle-based art-rock group Maxïmo Park, but has released three acclaimed solo albums and collaborated with the likes of folk singer Rachel Unthank, and Field Music's Peter Brewis. He continues to perform and record with the band - their eighth album, 'Stream Of Life', was released last September.&nbsp;Smith's solo concerts are known for their conversational intimacy and their mix of grunge-inspired power pop combined with fingerpicked melancholy. This will be a rare opportunity to see him play alone, and hear his songs at their most stripped back.
